Already says they are going to send back my Xbox so I figure it has been replaced rather than repaired, hopefully with a new one but most likely its a refurb.

Dashboard Walkthrough |

OK so firstly I shouldn't have been so swift in saying how I felt about the completely new dashboard look because this video has made me feel a lot better about it. The thing I like the most is when the guide button thing is open in the center of the screen, it looks a lot simpler and cleaner but also with a lot more functionality. So I guess I will have to make my mind up when I get to use it whenever its out.

"New Xbox Experience" quite simply I don't like it |

I think the title explains it all really, the new xbox dashboard looks cheap and not much like a games console GUI but more of a Power Point Presentation. I love my 360 as my blog kind of shows, I'm looking forward to the whole Avatars and installing games to the HDD but this isn't even nearly good. Poor at best. Unless you can keep the classic dashboard with blades I doubt I will be using it for much else than to play games anymore.

Too Human Demo Reviewed |

The Too Human demo which is available on Live is really not all that impressive considering the initial hype the game got. The first and biggest problem I found was that trying to control the camera actually made the sword move?! OK so there is no camera control, however the combat controls which replace it feel quite natural (except that I kept forgetting and trying to change the camera angle). The problem with the combat controls were that they are too simple and I found myself just button bashing with the wiggle stick in the general direction of enemies, if it had been more complex and it was explained like EA's Skate it might have worked a lot better.

The art design felt very Mass Effect to me but some of the graphics I found less impressive, not saying the graphics aren't good but just not great. I did find some environmental effects nice including the sun at one point and snow right where you get to start playing. They give you a bunch of different environments from a dungeon like temple, to forest, to large valleys.

Another problem I had, but this could be because it was only a demo is that I have no idea what's going on in the world of Too Human and I find it hard to choose a class and upgrade my skills because I have no idea what they really mean, it is explained a little but more background information needs to be given so I can make an informed guess, although I had the same problem with Mass Effect which I ended up loving..

Overall it feels like an alright game, just without the layer of polish to finish it off. The main problem is that something I use so often such as the left stick controlling the camera being changed to the control of melee combat could be just enough to put me off wanting this game. I think it will be one of those games I'll get once I can get my hands on for about £20.

Some new features coming to 360 |

Straight from the Major:

  • Play from hard drive. Copy your games from the game disc and play directly from the hard drive. Not only will the drive not spin, but load times are quicker, as well. Of course, you will still need the disc in the tray to prove you own the game.
  • Access Xbox LIVE Marketplace on the Web. Browse and purchase Marketplace content whenever you want from Xbox.com and it downloads automatically to your console. Purchase that new map, television episode, the latest Xbox LIVE Arcade game or set up a movie to watch when you get home from work.
  • Dashboard built into the new Xbox Guide. For everyone who loves the blades interface, it’s not going away; they are now built directly in to the new Xbox guide. Every feature and option is available right from the guide. You can even access your full games library at all times. No matter where you are (in dash or in game), immediately call up your games played list and directly launch a game.
  • LIVE Party system. Create a party of up to eight friends, and stay with them from one game to another, or watch a Netflix movie together, or share a slideshow of your personal photos. It works with all Xbox 360 titles, not just upcoming games. LIVE Party allows up to eight people to chat in the dashboard, so you can meet up before playing.
  • Xbox LIVE Primetime. This whole new category of games is going to give you more reasons to get online with your friends. Games will support everything you’d expect, like Achievements and leader boards, but many of these games will include real prizes. You can invite your friends, and even set a reminder for an upcoming show. Each game is broadcast simultaneously, so everyone is answering the same questions. Many events will have a live host, calling the shots as they happen.
  • Avatars Your online identity started as a Gamertag - it then grew into a personalized Gamercard. Now, it has evolved even further into avatars. You can express your style, check out new outfits and share this with the community. Avatars will also be integrated into Xbox LIVE Arcade games, LIVE Party, as well as retail games.
  • New display support. Because you asked for it, we are adding 16X10 over VGA or HDMI, and support for 1440x900 or 1680x1050.

(my monitor will look good finally in its 1440x900)

MAKE MONEY ONLINE Tuesday, July 08, 2008 |

OK ok so this seems like spam and well I guess it is, but you can make like £1 / £0.50 for doing surveys on this site, they also have surveys with prize draws which are usually alot shorter but I guess it's worth a go. Once you get £50 of credit they'll send you a cheque. I found this on the Times website so I guess its legit too.

Seriously... Monday, June 30, 2008 |

I don't even want to play Gears of War ranked matches anymore, I mean what's the point when I all I can see now is how broken the ranking system is. Okay okay I am trying to get a couple of achievements on there like 100 boom-shot kills but it doesn't mean I can't enjoy my time on there, but I really can't. Why is it that because other people are quitting during the game I am the one getting penalised for it by not receiving any stats from the game? I have played about 5 or 6 games today and only have 1 of those to show for it, so when I'm aiming to climb up the leaderboard how exactly am I supposed to do it when only 1/5 games are being counted.

If this is the same in Gears of War 2 in November I don't think I will even try playing it because in my opinion it's complete b/s.

Bungie.net Tuesday, June 17, 2008 |

I never realised how good the Halo community is until I went on the site earlier tonight, I think Microsoft should attempt something like this for the whole of the 360. Although it would be a mammoth of a task to build and maintain I think it would be worth it, if all 360 games had the ability to save the stats to your xbox.com profile and recent online game play videos to your 360 and then allow you to upload screenshots to your profile I would use the site probably about ten times the amount I do now.

Fedora 8 on Acer Travelmate 5720 Monday, March 24, 2008 |

Acer Travelmate 5720:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 (64-bit compatible)
Card reader: 5 in 1 card reader
Display Type: 15.4" TFT
Max Resolution: 1280 x 800 ( WXGA )
Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon X2500 HyperMemory up to 1GB
Audio Output: Sound card
Integrated Crystal Eye Webcam

+ Fedora 8

My installation went fine, however the first noticeable problem after installing is the screen resolution is set to 800x600 or 1024x768. So first thing to do is to install the graphics drivers for the ATI X2500, however as there are no official linux drivers for this (because ATI are being a weird about that :/) as far as i know there are 3 ways to do this which are listed in the link below.

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Fedora_8_Installation_Guide

The one which worked best for me was the 3rd option, the official drivers however as X2500 is not listed use the X1600 driver and this seems to work. (however I guess that some functions of the graphics card may not work because its using drivers for an older card?)

Once you have installed the drivers for this you might like to get compiz-fusion up and running which should not with your newly installed drivers however some things may not be working in this (for example the widget layer) to fix this check this thread for how I did it.

http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showthread.php?t=7305&highlight=widget+F9

At this point I started to realize my laptop was getting a little hotter than usual, this is because my heat sensors were not detected and my fans were not running due to this. To fix this:

become root
su -
then type
sensors-detect

it will ask you if it can load some stuff, read through this and once your done reboot then type
sensors
to check what temp your running at.

Once this is all done as far as I can tell everything else seems to be working, I have yet to check my card reader and will update if I find its not working when I try.

Firefox add-on Friday, August 10, 2007 |

I have just upgraded to a dual core notebook (Acer Travelmate 5720) and just found a couple of useful FireFox add-ons;

Auto Copy - I have already found the usefulness of this add-on when I was on my desktop it saves a lot of hassle and often miss hit keys causing something wrong to happen.. but its even more useful when using a notebook because it means you do not have to move you fingers across the whole keyboard and mouse-pad like your playing finger twister. This is pretty useful to everyone and anyone so I suggest you check it out.
link

Foxmarks - This was a new one I found today when wondering if there was an alternative to copying over all my bookmarks in FireFox, it will also have lasting usefulness as I may add a bookmark which I want to use on both my notebook and desktop. Basically you create an account and log in on both machines (or more I would have imagined) and it automatically syncs the bookmarks for you.
link

I will sort out a review of my notebook sometime in the next week once I have had a bit of use out of it as there are none and someone might find it useful at some point.

All Peers Thursday, August 09, 2007 |

All Peers is an add-on for FireFox which allows you to share files with friends, it also has an IM feature. However what makes it better than sending files by e-mail or MSN and other instant messengers is that there are no file size limits and it allows files to pause when you or the other contact go offline meaning they can resume when you are both online at the same time again.

OpenDNS Monday, August 06, 2007 |

The main problem using this DNS is that it is based in USA so when I use google it automaticly uses google.com so I often have to change the search to .co.uk so it searches products in the UK.. I did however see a slightly faster load of some sites but not enough to have to keep changing to UK if I am looking for somthing..

how to speed your internet up a little Saturday, August 04, 2007 |

OpenDNS is a free DNS service which add security and speed to your Internet, it does this by allowing many people to use the service and allowing more people to add malicious websites to a block list reducing the risk of getting spyware or viruses while browsing the web. It also has a large cache system which caches the domain names so they load faster. The system has a typo corrector for example typing in www.google.cm would automatically be changed to www.google.com.

and Fastcache "FastCache is a caching DNS server that runs on your local machine and handles any DNS request that your computer makes, from Internet Explorer to your favorite FTP client. Once a query is made, FastCache will override the normal timeout for the item with one that you specify, so instead of saving a query for a couple of seconds, it can save it for a couple of days." This will also cause sites to load slightly faster, especially if you visit them often.

The Wasted Web Saturday, June 30, 2007 |

I haven't posted in a while, but I was thinking recently about how little I use the web and I mean that in the full sense, not using it to view 1 or 2 websites.. I think that its become almost a second nature and is continuing to go that way further. So I figure if there is anyone who reads this or ever comes across this post I'll give a couple of cool websites that I use and I'll try and add updates to this post or others.. I'd also like to hear of other websites which I might find fun to use and can share.

Oh Free sites only too :)

www.myspace.com - Now I know its an obvious one for most, but I guess there are still people who haven't used it. It is at the end of the day an awesome website, an online community where you can talk to old friends and meet new ones easily. They are always adding new features such as videos, films and music. It is also a great way for unknown bands to spread their music around and often leading to bands becoming signed by major labels. However there does seem to be an obsession with getting comments and picture comments.. the bulletin board is also over/misused by many of the people mostly for reasons of looking "cool" with more friends than their real life friends.

www.youtube.com - Another obvious one but again many people may not have heard of this one, Its basically a television full of videos uploaded by users on the site. There is an ever growing number of videos on the site and many different types of videos from movie trailers, music videos and even video blogs. Once in a blue moon there are special features such as the full length film Four Eyed Monster.

www.twitter.com - Twitter is a kind of blog website however its a much simpler form where you post a short sentence of what you are doing, its easy to update and can be done free by text message (well standard price but Twitter don't charge). It creates a flash embed which is able to put on your personal website or page to allow others to know what you are doing.

www.last.fm - Last.fm is a social music network which once you download the free software adds plug ins to your music players (they also have a plug in for ipods) and records what music you listen to. It then cleaverly creates lists o other bands you may like from data from other people who have the same sorts of music tastes as you. They also add new features such as the Gig finder which informs you of upcoming gigs from bands you have listened to that are playing in your area. You can also tag music of what genre you think it is to allow others to also hear about them if they search for that tag.

www.spout.com - This is sort of a movie version of last.fm but it's a little more work, this is because you have to add in the films you've seen, want to see etc but its just as rewarding as it'll give you some films you might like to see. It allows you to write your own review of the film then others can rate your review, and just like last.fm you can tag words to the films and clicking on them will open a list of films which have been tagged with the same word.

www.current.com - This is a little bit of a mix between myspace and youtube, its like youtube where users submit videos however its only user created footage on any subject or topic. Its like myspace in the way that its based around community and have many features like polls and busy forums. There is also a chance if your video becomes popular on the site and gets some good reviews it might be picked to air on their TV channel current.tv (also a good channel check the site for details).

www.flickr.com - Flickr is the photo version of youtube, its a site which allows you to uploads your own photos and others rate and view them. It allows you to see what camera was used to take the photo (if the user gives this information). It also has the usual photo site features (slideshow, folders etc) and the major problem is that it hides your photos after you upload a certain amount unless you pay but if your not planning on uploading too many or only want your newer shots to be seen its pretty good.

You really need to check these sites out for yourself, I haven't given too much information because theres not too much point when you could spend a few minutes messing around with the sites. I think you should be able to know enough from the short descriptions if your interested or not.

Halo 3 Beta Friday, May 18, 2007 |

First taste is that this game is going to be FUN. To me the graphics aren't what I expected even at the beta stage.. now I'm not saying that the game is ugly, in fact I think its far from it but the hype they gave this game I was expecting a lot more. Besides the fact I don't think the graphics are great theres not too much else I can say bad about this beta, its fun, map layouts are interesting and could imagine them being for a while and the guns are pretty well balanced. Since I never really got into the old Halo games I'm still trying to get the hang of how to play this game well but should keep me busy at least.

So basically what I'm saying is if you don't have Crackdown to get into this beta go get it quick. Its not like Crackdown isn't a good game, go on buy it.

Playstation 3 launched Saturday, March 24, 2007 |

Yesterday and well what can I say it was pretty disappointing launch here in UK.. Couple of things happened elsewhere tho such as this: "Xbox 360 Loves You" boat in France
and those nice people who gave PS3 waiters in London a chair to sit down with this link on.

Apart from the things Microsoft did to liven it up, it was pretty stale and unimpressive and didn't even make it into the news.

Gears of War Wednesday, February 21, 2007 |

I'm getting back into it more now, especially now that theres someone to play with :) that I know who doesn't always just beat my ass or vice versa which means I can still learn a hell'a lot from playing. Don't think too I'm far off my pistol and sniper kills.. (well thats if using beatdowns count).

In other news I found my phone has only just been ordered because they didn't ring back to confirm so fingers crossed it'll be here tomorrow... but on the current track record of it lol, I'd say thats a bit doubtful.

iPod Nano - 2G (8GB - Black) Wednesday, February 14, 2007 |

Thinking about going to uni, I decided it would be a good idea to buy an mp3 player which worked for me.. A replacement for my Sony Walkman NW-A3000 20 GB player, which I found to be a bit of a burden to use and update.

Anyway so I looked around, and kinda had it in my head I wanted an iPod, I don't really want to have one with a hard drive since from experience they are a bit slow so I figured a Nano would be nice. Looking on the apple shop, I was only willing to shed out for a 4GB version which I probably would have resented once I had it and wanted an 8GB.. However on ebuyer it was much cheaper £140 for an 8GB so I brought it and payed a little extra for next day delivery.

Now on first impressions, in the box it looks pretty standard, comes in a nice apple style box.
Inside the box is:
  • iPod Nano
  • USB lead
  • Dock adapter
  • iPod Headphones
  • Manuals & 2 apple stickers
Once I'd charged up the nano and had a little read of the manuals it was time to turn the little guy on, holding the nano it felt extremely small.. usually I like a little more to hold onto but this felt nice, also a good weight. The second thing besides the size was the screen its very bright and looks great.

This being my first iPod I have to say how easily I have picked up using the menu, they have a good system going so I don't suppose they will change it anytime soon which I think is a good thing.

Also some great quality sounds from it and the headphones are pretty comfortable so I wont have to buy another pair unless they break most likely.

Everything else on the nano works good, the games are a little unusual and I probably won't ever even play them again after trying them out, so I feel they could have just left them out and no one would have batted an eyelid.

iTunes
I was extremely surprised with it, I know its hardly the best music software but I had in my mind this unusable program but in reality its actually pretty good. It gave me some details about my iPod once it was plugged in and it also updated it for me which was pretty sweet. Since some of my music has different artist tags, I changed them and it was auto finishing them for me which I thought was awesome, I tried a couple letters for it and it put it to others already in my list. I also had a little look at some podcasts and its set up so it puts the latest Major Nelson onto my iPod :) another great feature..

Today while in town I found a brand new official Apple iPod Dock for £6 (£25 RRP), It was an offer I couldn't decline since I had already thought about looking for one, it was marked as second hand but when I opened it (as I expected) it looked unused and still in wrapping. BONUS! Hooked up nicely to my pc and keeps my desk a little tidier and I think I'll be more inclined to hook up my iPod and keep him up to day now.

Overall I am VERY glad I brought this new iPod nano, hopefully it'll last the 4 years of university - I have high hopes because it seems a pretty sturdy peice.

It's been a while Thursday, February 08, 2007 |

I haven't had anything I've wanted to really say - still done haha but theres always some new things

Wii opera browser is pretty good, can see a few things which I'd like to see improved such as customizable homepage (even if you have to set you own as I could make one) and tabs would be useful too, but any improvements are always nice.

New phone should be here on Tuesday, D830 (Samsung again - you gotta love it) only goner be here then because I thought I might like a different one, figures I don't so I have to wait a bit to send it back.

Buffalo Air Station wireless router, finally went wireless but only really for my Wii and DS (hopefully I should have a mac book too so that can use it) Its pretty good speed seems to be pretty fast on Wii via the access point feature, DS is a bit dodgie could be the actual DS rather than the router however.

Getting £50's worth of Argos vouches for my Samsung D600 off Envirophone, which I thinks pretty decent since I'd rather have that than nothing :)

Well might be a long time before I post again haha but off to Bristol tomorrow with mark owens to check out the UWE and night life lol.

PO (Peace Out)

My 18th Birthday and Christmas Day :)

I realised that Jesus has been steeling my thunder for the last 17, so he AIN'T this year :D

My first two hours in Zbrush Monday, December 11, 2006 |

After watching a couple of video tutorials of Zbrush basics, I started to model a face (how origional haha) well it didnt turn out what I had in my head which is a bad thing but it did turn out looking somewhat like a head, sooo I was pleased with that.

Here are some images of it:

Zbrush is a powerful tool, and is somewhat easy to use however you have to watch some tutorials to get started since it can all be a bit scary how much stuff is on your screen. A thing I thought which was great is the run through of its features where at points your mouse will take over and show you things. Also if you mouse over and hold down CRTL it gives you some information on the tool or whatever.

Wii Play Test - 1 Sunday, December 10, 2006 |

Ok I got my Wii through the post today, even tho it is for christmas day/birthday I had an hours play. Still.. anyhoo.

Outta the box:

The wii is extreamly small, even though I did expect it to be small it is much smaller in real life. The "Wiimote" and "Nunchuck" addon are also very small, but this allows them to fit into your hand with easy and hopefully giving you abit more needed grip (or not causing some mighty fine WiiDamage.com).
Wii Sports is free with the consol, which is a nice suprise to be given a game to play straight away
Theres also the boring cables and power supply (which is around 1/3 the mass of the consol, but nowhere near as big as the 360's BEAST!)
You also get the sensor bar which is also smaller than I had anticipated being no longer than 30cm (12inches).. I didnt measure it but its not longer than that.

Turning it on:

The first time you turn on the Wii (besides being enchanted by the blue lights around the auto loading DVD drive) you are sent through a quick setup wizard; time, date, consol nickname.. the usual.
Once you turn it on and get the cursor on screen everything feels smooth and fresh, the little rumble when you mouseover a link is pretty sweet too.

I only had a quick blast at Wii Sports
(Bowling, Boxing, Tennis, Baseball, Golf)

All the controls are extreamly easy to pick up and play, nothing difficult (except the timing on baseball) It does feel alittle strange but I noticed the more you do it how you would actually do it (or as much as you possibly can) with the Wiimote the better it is.

Bowling:
This is pretty good, quite alot like real life without the brused toes. It took me around 5 attempts to get used to bowling like this and it was fun.. but im not sure for how long.

Boxing:
This was my second favorite part of the game, it's quite good exercise (as much as a computer game can be without being lame) and its really fun punching someone in the face without having to feel any pain

Tennis:
Didnt actually play :/ just realised haha

Baseball:
This was my favotire part, possibly because I like baseball and never get to play it because its not really a UK sport haha but its not too easy either. It's all about timing and actually trying to hit it in a good direction. As when you do hit it, and it feels good it usualy ends up being caught by a fielder, but neverthe less it was great fun.

Golf:
This one probly took the most getting used to, After I realised how to actually hit the ball and not have practise shots (which I now just realised that the bar on the side is the distance you have to hit it, and it would be a good idea to have a practise shot to see how much you have to hit it :/) ok, well that changed my mind about it, it seems slightly easier thinking back but still not the easiest.

Overall the graphics arn't great, but the comic look of the characters kinda makes up for this.

IMO the Wii is the truly first consol which has pushed gaming past the controler, its allowing you to do the things you wanted to do as a kid (running around with a stick for a sword, chopping the heads off goblins (flowers)) The graphics may not be up to the other new-gen consols like the X360 and PS3 but it doesnt matter, I feel once I am into a game I hardly notice the graphics.. tho they help sometimes its usualy about gameplay and from my first impression the Wii will have great gameplay.. If they can keep thinking of new idea, else we might end up having many games basicly the same.

Supercard Lite + Superkey Arrived Tuesday, August 22, 2006 |

They both arrived a few days ago, I've tested a few DS backups and they pretty much all run perfect. GBA backups however seem a bit slow, I've been playing a little bit of Pokemon Fire Red.. I'm not sure if its either usual like that or due to "slowdown" but it seems to be quite slow walking..

The software (which I downloaded from the the Supercard website) Is very easy to use, just add a file and it exports it for use with the supercard. It also seems there are regular updates to the software and firmware of the supercard which is always a good sign.

Besides that, I would 100% recommend this to anyone with a DS Lite
